What the climate normals say about epoxy in Miami
One data sheet for a smooth-finish epoxy coating (manufacturer, Canadian edition) sets an upper substrate temperature, a humidity cap during the work and the cure, and a margin above the dew point. NOAA's normals for Miami International Airport let us set local air readings next to some of those limits.
On that sheet, the substrate must sit between 50 F and 86 F 2. It must also stay at least 5 F above the dew point 2. The concrete may hold no more than 4% moisture on a Tramex meter reading 2.
Miami averages 91.5 days per year1 with a high of 90 F or more. The hottest month, by normal daily high, is 90.7 F (Aug)1.
On 41 days per year3, the computed normal humidity at 6 a.m. is above the sheet's humidity cap. Early morning is a common start time for coating work, so we checked that hour.
What these numbers do not tell you
They are airport air readings, not the temperature or moisture of your slab. A garage can run hotter or cooler than the airport, and a slab holds moisture on its own schedule.
Only a test of your slab settles it. A good scope names the moisture reading, the slab temperature and the cut-off for a start.
Epoxy in plain words
Epoxy is a resin you mix with a hardener, and it builds a hard film on the slab. Many installers add decorative flakes. Each product sheet lists its own wait before cars can return, so ask for that wait in writing.
One editorial guide says epoxy can yellow and fade in direct sunlight 4. A closed garage sees less sun, but an open door lets some in (our reasoning).
Hot-tire marks are a common worry. We found no independent test data, so we cannot rate epoxy on it. Ask what the warranty says about hot-tire marks.
What moves the price of an epoxy floor
We hold no Miami quotes. National guides give wide ranges for epoxy, and the table on this page lists them with their sources.
Flakes change the price. A kit seller (vendor) estimates a professionally installed flake (chip) epoxy system at 5 USD per sq ft5 to 9 USD per sq ft5. It is the only flake price we have read, so use it as a rough guide.
Quotes differ because scopes differ: the prep method, crack repair, thickness and flakes. Compare scopes line by line, not only the total. The cost guide goes further.

Is epoxy good for a Miami garage floor?
It can be, if the slab is dry, the surface is prepared and the start date fits the sheet limits. Miami has long hot, humid stretches in a normal year, so timing and testing carry weight.
What is the downside of epoxy on concrete?
Epoxy bonds only as well as the slab and the prep allow. Moisture in the slab, a smooth or sealed surface, or a start outside the sheet limits can each make it fail. Some epoxy can yellow in direct sun 4. Ask how each risk is handled in the written scope.
Can I do an epoxy garage floor myself?
You can buy kits. Installers say kit coats are thin and more likely to peel, but we found no independent data on that. Check the kit's limits for humidity, dew point and slab moisture against your garage first.
